England and Wales flip the switch today on the Crime and Policing Act rules that criminalize possession or publication of realistic porn depicting non-fatal strangulation or suffocation, penetrative sex between people a reasonable viewer would think are related (including certain step and foster), or adults role-playing as under-16. Publication can draw up to five years; possession of the under-16 material up to three and the other categories up to two. Ofcom confirmed the content is now illegal for individuals, but platform duties wait on updated codes after a consultation planned for the first half of 2027. The regulator is already talking to sites and says operators do not need to wait to start scrubbing libraries. FSC has called the rules draconian and vague. Creators with UK traffic or UK-based platforms should treat today as the delete deadline and talk to counsel. Source

The gap between individual criminal liability starting now and enforceable platform duties in 2027 leaves a messy window where enforcement can still hit people and content while the big tech obligations lag. Roald Riepen is stepping down as CEO of International Media Company after 13 years, exiting completely as shareholder and partner.
